Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

BY FAR the easiest and most natural method of expansion for road haulage operators is to move into warehousing. Many companies have already capitalised on this method of diversification. But they are mainly the larger fleet men.

It is a concept that should appeal to operators of all sizes. Indeed, there is no reason why groups of the smallest fleet operators cannot form co-operatives and offer a complete warehousing, transport and distribution service for local small manufacturers.

Many operators have excess space which could be profitably used as a warehouse. There are innumerable empty buildings throughout the country which could be rented for the purpose.

This type of operation is similar to transfer terminal operation and would provide an economic service to the manufacturing industry. It would also lead to the better use of vehicles.

The rail disruption has moved traffic from rail to road. If road operators now offer their new customers this additional service they could do so on a long-term contract and thus retain the business.

Road transport does not get many opportunities to increase its business. This is one which should not be passed up. It could secure the future for many who today are concerned about tomorrow.
