AN appeal by the Railway Executive and Eastern Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., against the granting of licences to Nicholls (Clare), Ltd. and Premier Travel Ltd., permitting them to continue to operate express services between Stradishall R,A.F. camp and London, has been dismissed by the Minister of Transport.
Mr. R. L Hiscott, a Ministry inspector who heard the appeal at Cambridge on May 28, said that it would be uneconomic and wasteful to tun a feeder service, as suggested by the appellants, by road for a distance of some 24 miles to a railhead at right angles to the eventual destination, when the direct route was only 57 miles.

CRANE OPERATIVES' 15tt. RISE A N increase of I5s. per week upon the former highest rates has been awarded by the Industrial Court to driver-operatives of the Road Haulage Executive employed on handling mobile cranes with a lifting capacity of over 10 tons.
When the R.H.E. obtained a crane much larger than any previously used, they offered driver-operatives £8 per week in London and £7 16s. elsewhere —10s. greater than the previous top rates. The trade union claimed £9 9s. The court awarded £8 5s. in London and £8 Is. elsewhere.
HIRE RATES INCREASED INCREASED hire rates for mechanical I sweepers and furniture vans have been decided by Gateshead Corporation. The rate for sweepers is to be raised from 15s. Id. to 18s. an hour, and for furniture vans from 1 Ts. 9d. to 12s. 6d.

C01NC1DING with the recent increase in the price of petrol and oil in Britain, Australia has decided to decrease the cost of its petrol by I fd. a gallon. The new price fixed by a conference of Australian States for petrol in cities is 3s. 5d. a gallon.
