THE ELECTRON brush is a new device for use with the Ford timer cover. It is made on one simple idea-that, as something has to wear in the timer, it had better be some one thing easily replaceable, rather than a number of different things. In this device it is the brush proper that wears, and it consists of a solid " chunk" of copper, with rounded edges, shown at A on the left ot the accompanying sketch. The brush is forced outwards by springs—away from the centre of the brush arm—and is thus
kept in intimate contact with the internal circumference of the timer cover.
The writer has seen several Ford timers in which Electron brushes had been used For long periods. One of them had run over 13,000 miles. In no case was there any perceptible wear of the segments or fibre. Li the timer that had served for over 13,000 miles two brushes had been worn right alit, and a third had been inserted, The reason for these remarkable results is obvious. Copper is relatively soft; the steel segments and the intervenine fibre are relatively hard ; so the copper wears gradually away, while the segments and fibre remain unaffected. When one copper brush is worn out another, can be instantaneously inserted, without the use of tools and without removing the radiator. It costs only of. New springs also have occasionally to be fitted—less often than the brush. These also cost 6d. the set.
The Electron brush is intended for use with the standard timer cover, whicti must, however, be in perfect condition when the brush is first fitted. Granted that, it is claimed that the timer, with occasional renewals of the copper piece, and rare renewals of the springs behind it, la practically everlasting, and there is no apparent reason why it should not be. Other virtues are claimed for the Electron device, but: extreme durability is, of. -course, its strongest appeal. It
runs unlubricated. .
