Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AFULL range of single-screw, doublescrew, and telescopic-screw tipping gears of front 1-ton to a-ton, capacity have been developed by the Spenborough Engineering Co., 'of Heckniondwike, Yorks.

Already a large number of these gears bas been sold, and the good workmanship evidenced in them is increasing their popularity. A short description of the telescopic-screw gear may be of interest to our readers, and will be representative of. the .range.built.

The gear is constructed of two angle irons, which are easily fixed to any chassis. On to these ,is bolted the swape shaft 'brackets. The bevel gears for operating the screws are of cast steel

and are practically un.11-zeakable. The wheel bracket, on the top of which is mounted a ball thrust washer, takes the :eight of the screw and of the load. An important feature. of the design is that this bracket. does not fulcrum on the swaps shaft itself', but is supported on two stout bushes protruding from the swape shaft bearings, thus avoiding all friction on the swape shaft itself.

The mild-steel screws are proportioned according to the size and capacity of the gear, and are cut with pitches siiitable for their different diameters.

The hard phosphor-bronze nuts' and the body fixings are other special features. On to the bo-dy is bolted a plate with a central pin, which carries another plate on which is mounted a nut. This allows the body to align itself when unevenly loaded, or through the chassis being on uneven ground while the load is being tipped. The standard size telescopic gear for a 4-tairchassis gives a lift of 6 ft. 6 ins., although higher lifts -can be made to suit individual requirements: . The great advantage of the telescopic gear is 'that the length protruding above the chassis is much shorter than is the

cake with the simple screw type. -The prices range from £5 17s, 6d. to £35 10s., a.nti..tliese include the hinge

bar brackets and the body fixings..

There is no doubt that the fitting of a tipping gear to, a vehicle not so equipped greatly increases its value,, both to. its owner and to anyone who may desire to hire it ; it therefore forms a most profitable investment.

The makers give every facility to customers for fitting op tipping gears on existing bodies.' or can . themselves provide -new bodies complete with the gears.
