OTTINGTIAM'S possession of one

of the finest Ater esplanades in the country, with its wide-sweeping embankment extending from Trent Bridge towards Wilford, has enabled it to pro'vide admirable facilities, amid picturesque surroundings, for its annual show and competition of commercial 'motor vehicles, the third of the series of .whieh took place on Saturday afternoon, 'the 7th inst., under torrid meteorological conditions, resulting in adisplay marking a significant advance upon earlier encouraging efforts.

Stretching from a point at a convenient distance from the entrance to the embankment, the exhibits, numbering over 200 and representing a wide range of :petrol, steam, and electric vehicles; coil, stituted a record for the provinces, the . importance of which was emphasized at. the mallgural proceedings 1.)y the attendance of the Mayor of :Nottingham (Aid. E. L. Alarming' and the Sheriff of. the City (Mr. 3. Farr), together with th.e Mayoress and the wife of the Sheriff.

It was to the gratification of those wha recall that it was mainly due to Mr. F. C. Bristow's assiduous effortsthat the organization of owners of commercial motor vehicles was first promoted in this part of the Midlands, as the outcome of a, meeting which he addressed in Nottingham many years ago, that he was again present and acted as a judge..

It was encouraging to note that the executive, whose successful work has been largely due to the unflagging efforts of the East Midlands Divisional hon.

secretary, Mr. T,. H. Trease, , of Parade Chambers, South Parade, NPttingham, had received substantial contribution to the prize and general funds of the organization, among those appro. priatelit heading the list, being members of the Motor Haulage Section of the Nottingham -Chamber of Commerce.

A. class for non-members had been included, with the reasonable hope of attracting many fresh adherents to the ranks, which, it is urged, should include all-owners of commercial motor vehicles, whose multifarious interests may be thereby best served. The chief marshal was Mr. V. D. Thomas, who Was assisted by Messrs.

A. H. Edwards, N. E. Cullen, 13. W. Masters, S. Clutterbuck and H. S. Dawson.

The general attractiveness of the display was considerably enhanced by the exhibition of certain of the corpora

tion's motor fire-engines, whii . ineluded the latest types of such appliances, in addition to which the municipality's resources for general purposes of public work were evidenced by the entry of numerous motor vehicles from the health department and the works and ways departnient, proving lecomplete revolution which, has been effected in Nottingham in recent years by the' use of well-equipped motor vehicles for scavenging and other purposes.

There was nci, more interesting feature incidental to the exhibition than that re lative to theof drivers, which was held in April, the work being of both a written and practical character, and disclosinga marked degree of proficiency as to which those conducting the tests were full of praise. The Mayoress, in the presence of a big crowd, distributed the cash prizes immediately after the judging, the vehicles subsequently proceeding on a tour of many of the chief thoroughfares, the route taken being by way of Arkw right Street, Carrington Street, Wheeler Gate, Market Street.. Parliament Street, Milton Street, and Gregory Boulevard, thus traversing nearly half of the city from south to west, and affording an opportunity to thousands of interested sneer trators, who had not been able to undertake the journey to Trent. Bridge, of inspecting a great variety of utility motors.

The awards in the drivers' examination were as follow :—Written and Practical. — Divisional Champion. — First Prize, £5: J. Wade (Nottingham Corporation); 2nd, £3 : F. Garrett (" Beehive " Garage). • Written.-1st Prize, £3: A. Wright (Messrs. Skinner and Rook); 2nd, £2: C. C. Foster (Victoria Laundry); £1 10s. : T. Stacey (Nottingham Co-operative Society). Minor prizes going to A. E. Porter (Nottingham Cooperative Society; W. G. Miller (Nottingham Corporation); G. H. Crowther (Boots Pure Drug Co., Ltd.); A. F. Wells (Nottingham Corporation).

The general awards made on Saturday were as follow : Champion Team : For the test team of three vehicles of any type or age, each member being allowed to enter one team only. Challenge trophy, presented by Messrs. Boots Pure Drug Co., to be held for one year, and £10, to be divided between the team drivers. Awarded to t,•'erard Bros., Ltd., for three Albion lorries, Drivers A. Hind; P. Norton, and if.Sirrnmers.

For the beg team of three vehicles in any class, champion team excluded, the condition being that the teams must he vehicles of the same type—i.e., three steamers, three petrol or three electric vehicles, not necessarily of the same make.

Petrol.—First : Messrs. Sbipstone and Sons, Ltd., Star BneWery, Basford, with a Dennis Portland flat, an Albion flat, and a Dennis flat. Second; Messrs. Shipstone, with three Dennis flats. Third : Messrs. Shipstone, with a McCurd flat, a Star flat, and a Dennis flat.

Steam vehicles.—First : Messrs. Shipstone, with Foden flats. Second Messrs. Shipstone, with two Sentinel fiats and a Foden flat. Third : Messrs. Shipstone, with two Foden flats and a Sentinel fiat.

Electric vehicles. — First : Nottingham Corporation Health Department, with three Edison steel tipping wagons. Second Nottingham Corporation Health Department, with two Edison steel tipping machines and an.. Edison non-tipping. Third : Boots Pure Drug Co., with three Garrett motors.
