GEORGE MARTIN, the founder of an Essex livestock haulage firm and active Road Haulage Association (RHA) member, died last week aged 82. George set up GW Martin soon after returning from national service, with the business expanding in line with the lifting of meat rationing in the mid-1950s. The company moved into general haulage and became a pioneer in transporting live animals.
He was chairman of the Chelmsford branch of the RHA for many years, and lived in the village of Black Notley all his life.
GW Martin and Son is now run by his son Trevor, and two of his grandchildren, largely concentrating on fallen stock collection.
His funeral will take place at 1.30pm today (17 January) at St Peter and St Paul Church, Black Notley.
