AN application for a licence to run an express service between North London Coach Station and Dover as part of an inclusive tour service to Spain, made by London travel agents Spain Only Ltd., was refused by the Metropolitan deputy Traffic Commissioner, Mr. C. J. Macdonald, in London on Wednesday, The application was for one coach aweek between May and September.
Representing Spain Only, Mr. H. A. F. Gregg, a director, said his firm was a travel agents specializing in Spanish tours. The application was an extension of present activity, said Mr. Gregg, and the company wished to operate its own coaches. Spain Only received 2,000-2,500 letters daily inquiring about holidays, many of which were for coach tours. To use existing British carriers would not give the continuity and care to holidaymakers travelling to Spain which the company sought to develop.
Questioned by Mr. Macdonald, Mr. Gregg said he could not offer proof of bookings because the company did not yet have the service; he could not offer proof of letters of inquiry for such a service at the present time, but could start and collect evidence. Nor could he give any evidence as to price, but that also could be done later, he said.
Cross-examined by Mr. R. H. Roberts, for Fast Kent Car Co. Ltd., and Southdown Motor Services Ltd., two of the objectors, Mr. Gregg said his firm proposed to run direct tour services to Spain this summer which would be operated by Timpson and Sons Ltd. He could only plead ignorance of licensing procedure that he was not better prepared.
Refusing the application, Mr. Macdonald said that no application for a road service licence could succeed without evidence of need which the objectors could examine and comment on. There was no evidence to support the application and it must fail, he said.
