Should International THE president of the Royal Exhibition be Held in I Society of Arts, Viscount 1951 ? . . . . . Bennett, has sent to 165 organizations throughout the country invitations to be represented at a half-day conference to be held at the Society's House on February 6, at 11 a.m. It is to be a conference on the proposed International Exhibition in 1951. In December, 1945, a Government Committee made a strong recommendation in favour of such an Exhibition, and the Government accepted it in April, 1946, but the matter is now in suspense because the Government is averse to the use of Hyde Park as a site, also claiming that tabour and materials could • not be met so early. The Society, however, wishes the conference to discuss the following questions: (1) Whether an exhibition on a large scale should be held in London in the near future. (2) If so, whether Hyde Park should be the site. (3) Whether every effort should be made to hold it in 1951, the centenary year of the first International Exhibition. If the conference approves the general proposal, a formal A20 approach will then be made to London local authorities and the Government. It is suggested that, as regards materials, countries exhibiting would be prepared to provide their own. There need be no interference with Kensington Gardens, whilst buildings of a permanent character, such as conference halls, could be raised on some of the many war-damaged sites immediately adjoining the Park. New constructional materials, such as light alloys, might be employed.

Commercial vehicle nNCE again truck "Roadeos" Raise roadeos " are in the Driving Standards . . course of organization in the United States. The value of these public driving tests, sponsored as they are by the American Trucking Association, is well recognized, and they form an important factor in moulding a public opinion favourable to road transport. Following the suspension of the series as a result of the war, state and national " roadeos " were held again last year, and during the coming season it seems likely that at least half the states will be taking part in these events. The competitions place a premium on the ability of drivers and are an encouragement to careful selection of traffic staff. Further, they demonstrate to the public something of the knowledge and ability required if these men are to carry on their work satisfactorily. The " roadeos " are arranged with that flair for showmanship that characterizes the American people, and preliminaries to the state finals give spectators in many parts an opportunity to witness the complicated manceuvres. The public thus gains an insight into the value of the commercial vehicle to the country's economy, and, on the trade side, the trials serve as an inspiration towards continued progress.
