New Foden Product Which Should Appeal to Municipal Authorities.

T"need for economy in municipal work has resulted in the development of vehicles and machines which can be einployed for more purposes than one: This feature iS particularly useful where one of the purposes may not necessitate the employment of the vehicle or appliance for more than a modicum of its time.

Such a combined vehicle has recently been constructed by rodens, Ltd., of Sandbach, Cheshire, and in it the standard three-way tipping body can be replaced, as required, by a tar tank with a capacity of 1,200 gallons. This tank is mounted on, four wooden cradles, which are securely bolted to, a sub-frame made from lengths of 5-in. by 3-in. channel iron welded together.

-Suitable brackets are secured to -the sub-frame in such a position that they fit into the tipping hinges on the frame of the wagon, and in this manner the tank can be held securely to the chassis by the tipping-hinge pins, so that

it is a very simple matter to remove the tank when it is not required and the pins, being employed for two purposes, are not likely to be mislaid, as might happen if they are not used when the tar tank is fitted.

On the tank frame at the off-side rear is a powerful double-acting pump, which is coupled to the steam distribution block on the boiler of the wagon, so that the steam can be employed to work the pump. The reason for supplying the last named is to enable tar to be pumped out of railway tanks into the tank of the vehicle and from this again into storage tanks. Provision is made in the base of the pump for a large flexible pipe, which delivers the tar to the pump. After passing through the. pump, it is forced along a 2-in, steel pipe to a manhole on the top of the tank, into which it discharges. The exhaust steam from the porno passes into a large heating coil mounted within the tank at the rear, and this serves a double purpose. When the pump is not in use, live steam from the boiler of the Wagon can be turned into the heating coil so that the contents are always kept hot. The steam which has been utilized in this coil is exhausted into the asbpan of the wagon, and some of it is drawn through the fire, where it is converted into watergas, which is, of course, combustible and assists in heating the boiler.

To facilitate the changing over of the bodies, suitable lifting rings are provided on the frame of the tank, which is, of course, the heavier.
