Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

We’re shocked. A high-profile campaign to finally put an end to the fuel duty escalator has gained significant public support, the backing of the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association among a slew of stakeholders, and input and help from CM, Motor Transport, Truck & Driver and Roadtransport.com.

And yet the team running the campaign are having to urge hauliers to sign up to the petition (see p6). How can this be? After all, the fuel duty escalator has caused more outrage among operators than any other issue since its introduction nearly 20 years ago. Surely, it’s a no-brainer for every person working in the transport industry to back the campaign?

The vast majority of transport operators have web access, and signing the petition takes less than a minute, so there’s no obstacle there. Ah, it’s apathy isn’t it? “We’ve seen it all before and it didn’t work then”: that would appear to be many hauliers’ thoughts. And that is a shame. And that apathy must be overcome.

This week, Peter Carroll and his FairFuelUK campaign team are urging the industry once again to sign the petition and support the campaign. We have an opportunity before us, but it is fleeting, so everyone in the transport industry must grasp it. If we miss this time around, there may never be another chance – and the transport industry will only have itself to blame.

If you’ve ever complained about fuel duty, you must support the campaign.

Go to www.fairfueluk.com now – or never complain about fuel duty again. Justin Stanton
