ASPECIAL extendible semitrailer has been built by Carrimore Six Wheelers Ltd. in its new factory at Stanley, Co. Durham, to enable the operator, Alcan Industries Ltd., of Banbury, to transport aluminium sections varying in length up to 60 ft.
Having a capacity of 12 tons, the trailer is of the single-axle type and has a length of 30 ft. in the "closed" position and 44 ft. when it is extended, two additional locking positions being provided between these limits.
The two rolled-steel channel sections of the frame comprise a front main frame of 10 in. by 3+ in. and a rear frame of 8 in. by 3 in. channel with 4 in. by 2 in. outer longitudinals braced at intervals by angle sections of 2 in. by 2 in. by in., the rear frame sliding over the front frame on rollers. Opening and closing operations are facilitated by fitting rollers on both the top and bottom of the rear frame.
Built to the design of the operator, the headboard is particularly robust and features widebase tapered columns of Z section, retractable pillar extensions, two vertical reinforcing members of tapered channel section with boxed-in bottom ends and corrugated aluminium panelling.
Three detachable bolsters are included in the equipment, one of which is located at the rear, the two remaining bolsters being installed on each side of the platform division.
As can be seen in the photograph, maxim umlength aluminium sections can conveniently be carried on the bolsters in addition to a mixed load of sections on the platforms, or supported by the platforms, which have timbered decks.
Details of the trailer include 900 x 20 tyres and a three-line and air-pressure braking system operating 15+ in. x 5 in. drum brakes.
The tractive unit is a Leyland Super Comet and the trailer is equipped with a Carrimore SAE turntable. Both the tractive unit and trailer are finished in the Akan "blue and aluminium" livery while the Mean motive is printed on the cab doors and on the rear of the platform.
