Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LAST May I acquired a three-wheeled van, as the

result of inserting a small advertisement in your journal. Having obtained a C licence, I sought your advice as to the position in which 1 might be placed if I used the vehicle for pleasure in addition to business.

You replied to say that this would be permitted to the extent of the ration for private purposes, i.e., fuel for 90 miles a month, and, at that time, IN miles per month between June and August.

,Recently, probably because it was a Sunday, I was stopped by the police and asked if I had a permit to use the vehicle for pleasure. Fortunately, I convinced the constables that I was actually on a business journey. I would, however, welcome your assurance that I am within the law at all times in using it for my own private purposes, or if it be true that a permit is necessary.

[Regarding the business and private use of commercial vehicles, it is quite correct that commercial vehicles may be used for private purposes to the extent of the private ration, but this must not be done without authority from the district petroleum officer by whom your fuel is issued. You should ask him for the additional ration for the 90 miles per month, and only one vehicle per operator may be concerned. If you also have a private car, it would be difficult to obtain the authority. If your vehicle be not already registered for goods and private use for the purpose of Road Fund Tax, this will be necessary. You must also be covered by insurance for private use. and have you' policy amended if this be not the case. The authority for such private use was given in a letter issued by the Ministry of Transport in 1948.—ED.]
