Suggestions are being made in Wimbledon that the town's needs, so far as commtinication with the neighbouring town of Stilton is concerned, might well be served by a small fleet of modern motorbuses, as an alternative to the proposed railway.

The salary of Mr. P. Ellison, the general manager of the Motor Omnibus Department of the Eastbourne Corporation, is shortly to be increased substantially, in view of his growing responsibilities, and with due regard to the satisfactory results which have been achieved under his direction.

Provincial Service Changes.

We are given to understand that Commercial Car Hirers, Ltd., is running the new Alfreton-Chesterfield service, the inauguration of which we recorded last week, with the bus that was, until recently, in use between Ripley and Nottingham. Many difficulties were placed in the way of this latter enterprise, which has eventually had to be abandoned until a local guarantee be forthcoming.

A Motorbus Action.

In the Official Referee's Court, on Tuesday last, the hearing of an action between the owner of certain motorbuses in Cardigan and a local repairer was concluded_ A claim was entered for repairs executed locally, but this was disputed, and a counterclaim was made in respect of a further repair bill from J. I. Thornyeroft and Co., Ltd.. which company had built the machines, and to whom they were eventually sent by the owner to be put into thorough working order. Judgment was given for the plaintiff on both the claim and the counterclaim. Motorbuses for Variety Artistes.

Mr. Fred. harm, the proprietor of a number of popular music-hall sketch organizations, was fined last week for neglecting to take out a licence for a motorbus which he used for trau.sporting some of his companies and their equipments between the various halls at which they perform. The magistrate, who heard the case, decided that these machines were not used ' in the course of trade or husbandry," and that the owner was, therefore, liable to pay the tax upon them as

private motor-vehicles. Mr. Earn() uses a Beaufort-Stoewer double-deck motorbus and a Tnrgan single-deck machine.

Single-deck Buses in Paris.

'We illustrate, on this page, one of the several new types of single-deck motorbuses with which the Compagnie Unerale des Omnibus is now carrying eut extensive tests in actual service on the streets of Paris. Amongst the makers, whose new models are being subjected to these practical trials, are de Dion, Darracq and de Dietrich. The single-decker, of which we reproduce a photograph, is a 50 lip. Darracq; this machine is fitted with a circular cooler, and an enclosed fan of a

lar type to that which was favoured by several constructors in the French Tndustrial-Vehicle Trials of last November. A French correspondent writes to us, with regard to the de Dion models :-" They are fitted with bodies which are built to carry 30 passengers, for whom there. are 15 first-class upholstered seats, besides accommodation for 15 second-class travellers-six seated and nine stand

ing. The total weight, loaded, of such a machine is 7,200 kilo., or about 7 tons ; this does not constitute any improvement, in respect of weight, upon the existing 150 motorbuses in Paris, which, by-the-way, are all fitted with canopies. The new vehicles are too long satisfactorily to negotiate certain narrow routes, such as the Avenue de Cliehy-Od'eon. The Compagnie CrEine'rale is practically the only competitor for the new tramway and motorbus monopoly concessions, which are about to be awarded."
