Tests at Glasgow.

There will be found, on page 499, some details of the important tests which took place at Glasgow on Monday last, it may be remarked that the cylinders of the six-cylinder Halley engine are 5 in. in diameter, whilst the piston-stroke is in. ; the cylinders of the six-cylinder Dennis engine are 127 mm. in the bore, whilst the piston-stroke is 130 mm. The Halley system includes a singlestage turbine pump by Mather and Platt, Ltd.

Following the tests at Mugdock Reservoirs, a deep-lift test was made, on Monday afternoon, in the yard of the Glasgow Central Fire Station. Both the Dennis and Halley engines

effected a clear lift of 28 ft. ; the Merryweather engine got hold of its water at 22 ft.

Romford Seeks to Purchase.

Notice has been given, by Councillor Wilson, of the Romford Urban District Council, that he will move for authority—at the next meeting of the Council—to purchase a steam or petrol fire-engine for use in Romford.

Sheffield Brigade's Report.

The Chief Officer of the Sheffield Fire Brigade, in his excellent report for the past year, comments favourably upon the share which self-propelled equipment must take in future fire-fighting organization. A Dennis Engine for Fremantle.

Purchased through Messrs. Denny, the well-known shipbuilders, a 40 h.p. four-cylinder Dennis fire-engine, as illustrated herewith, has just been shipped to Fremantle. This is the first of Dennis's several Australian orders to be executed.

Walking to a Fire.

There was a somewhat-heated discussion, at Middlesbrough Town Council, recently, with regard to the intended purchase of a fire-engine. One of the councillors expressed views which caused the Chairman of the General Purposes Committee to state that some cooncillors would evidently " like to see the firemen walk to a fire."

The Fire Brigade Committee of the London County Council reports that the chassis obtained from the Vv'olseley Tool and Motor Car Co., Ltd., in 1903. at a cost of 2370, is practically worn out. The following quotations for another chassis were obtained: Dennis Brothers, Ltd. (accepted) £350; Commercial Cars, Ltd., £435.

A body will be fitted to the chassis, in the fire-brigade workshops, the cost of the work being estimated at £40, and an additional sum of £25 will be required for providing nonskids and other minor items.
