• A Welsh owner-driver who had nothing but problems after buying a second hand Magnum is trying to get Renault to admit that the 800.000km truck is at fault.

Nigel Green of Carmarthenshire says that more than 420,000 worth of repairs have been needed to the AE520 unit. Although Green bought the truck from an independent dealer, Suffolk-based Roy Humphrey, he is demanding compensation from Renault VI.

Renault has offered him £1,350 for out-of-pocket expenses and fuel costs when taking his vehicle to have it repaired.

The faults he lists on the vehicle include the handbrake not releasing after overnight parking, overheating and black smoke from the exhaust. Green says that at one stage the Magnum was parked up for three weeks while it was being serviced at Renault Trucks Bristol.

Mike Marsh, Renault's Aftermarket director. agrees that Green has had problems with the vehicle but says because he bought it from an independent dealer "legal responsibility for products sold by them rests with them".

Marsh adds that Renault has no liability in relation to Green and his Renault, and warns that Green will only get the £1,350 if he accepts this.

"We gave Green a loan vehicle when his own vehicle was off the road," he adds. "We have shown great integrity in solving the vehicle's problems and made a substantial financial contribution." Green, who still claims the manufacturer is at fault, is considering the offer.
