• Garry Turvey is to retire as director-general of the Freight Transport Association on his 59th birthday; three years before the association's normal retirement age for staff. He will leave on 11 October next year, 33 years after he joined the FTA in 1960, as assistant secretary.
Turvey says there is nothing unusual about his announce ment; "The normal retirement age for staff at the FTA is 62 but there's no fixed retirement age laid down for the directorgeneral," he says. "When I leave next year I will have done 33 years, and that's a long time for anyone."
The FTA says it is quite normal for an organisation to announce a retirement almost a year before the person leaves.
It will begin advertising the post in the press at the end of January, with interviews the following month and a possible announcement of Turvey's successor at the FTA's annual general meeting in April.
"It may seem a long time before Turvey leaves us," says the FTA, "but by the time we've appointed a replacement and had a suitable handover period, it's not that long at all."
