Aged 41, Mr. Thompson started his transport career as a student/apprentice fitter with Sunderland Corporation Transport in 1939 and after war service became assistant engineer with Northern General Transport Co. Ltd. in September, 1946. He joined Manchester Corporation as a technical assistant in 1952 and after appointments as garages engineer and senior engineer became chief engineer in 1962.

Mr. Derek Hailes has been appointed publicity manager of Crosland Filters Ltd. of Nottingham, a member of the Simms Group.

A Wiltshire area committee has been formed by the Western division of the TRTA. with Mr. D. B. Pratt (Ushers Brewery Ltd.) as chairman. Vice-chairmen are Mr. E. W. H. Scattergood (Wiltshire Farmers Ltd.) and Mr. D. P. McKenna (Buxted Chicken Co. Ltd.).

Mr. Clifford IL Fletcher has succeeded Mr. Alfred J. Wilson as district traffic superintendent of Ribble Motor Services Ltd. at Fleetwood. Mr. Wilson, who opened the Fleetwood depot in 1930, has retired after 37 years with the company. Aged 28, Mr. Fletcher has been assistant to the district traffic superintendent at Bootle since January, 1962.

Mr. G. A. Baxter has been appointed chief executive of National Benzole Co. Ltd., with the title of director and general manager. He succeeds Mr. Sydney Tindal., who is to retire on December 31, Mr. Baxter, who is 53, takes up his new appointment after a career in the railways, Civil Service and the National Farmers' Union, as well as in the oil industry. He has recently been a member of the management team in the Shell-Mex and BP group of companies. Mr. Tindale joined the National Benzoic company in 1928 and became director and general manager in 1963.

Mr. Keith Roberts has been appointed Avon Rubber Co. Ltd. area sales manager at Leeds.

As a further step in the integration of the fleet and retail department, Mr. J. R. Case has been appointed general sales manager, Rootes Ltd., London. Mr. M. K. Brown becomes sales manager, fleet/retail, cars and trucks, at the London, WIO depot and Mr. R. E. W. Picton becomes assistant sales manager of the department. All three have been with the sates departments of Rootes for many years.

Mr. R. A. J. Holding has been appointed chief engineer of the North Western Road Car Co. Ltd., in succession to Mr. P. H. Wyke Smith, who, as previously announced, will become general manager of the Yorkshire Traction Co. Ltd, on January 1.

Mr. Holding received his early training as a student engineer apprentice with Leyland Motors Ltd., from 1943 to 1945. He joined Ribble Motor Services Ltd. in 1953 as an assistant to the chief engineer. I-le became an area engineer in 1956 and four years later was appointed to his present post as assistant engineer of Ribble.

Mr. C. Broughton-Black, publicity manager of the Pyrene Co. Ltd., is to retire at the end of December after almost 40 years with the company. He has been in advertising all his career, starting with Burroughs Wellcome in 1915. B.B., as he is known, joined Pyrene in 1926 at a time when the company's fire extinguisher was building up its reputation.

. At a meeting of Area I (Southern) of the MPTA in London on Friday, Mr. C. S. A. Wickens, retiring as general manager at •Luton, was presented with gifts by the area chairman, Mr. W. Kershaw, on behalf of members of the area. The MPTA president, Aid. W. Alker, was among those present.

Obituary

VUE regret to record the death of VI' Mr. G. Hodsdon.

Mr. Hodsdon, aged 65, played a big part in building up commercial and passenger transport in High Wycombe 40 years ago, founding Pilot Coaches. Later this was merged to become Jeff ways and Pilot Coaches Ltd., of which Mr. Hodsdon was a director until he retired last January. He was also a director of Pilot Transport Ltd.
