• The Skoda Engineering Group of Pilsen has acquired a 52% stake in Czech truck builder Liaz. The truck maker posted heavy losses last year when it built fewer than 700 vehicles. Liaz has recently introduced its own Euro-2 engines following its deal to offer the Detroit Diesel 60 series Euro-2 engine two years ago.
The Skoc1,1
purchase brings truck making back to the company again—it sold its truck making concern in 1953 and Liaz was formed as a result. The acquisition is expected to lead to closer ties with the other Czech truck builder Tatra.
Skoda Pilsen is no longer connected with Skoda's car making activities, now wholly owned by VW.
