Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Renault Truck Industries has become the latest HGV builder to decide to give the Scottish Motor Show a miss in November. RTI joins Foden, Scania, Steyr, Mercedes-Benz and Seddon Atkinson as one of the many manufacturers unconvinced of the show's effectiveness. Leyland Daf, Iveco Ford, ERF, AWD, MAN and Gray and Adams, along with several van manufacturers, will, however, definitely be at the Scottish Exhibition Centre on 10-19 November.

The Scottish Motor Traders Association says that while the RTI move is "regrettable, we are in no way despondent. It is not going to detract at all from the show. There will be enough truck and dealer exhibits at the show to still attract interest."

According to the SMTA it has written to RTI asking for a reason why it has decided not to exhibit at the SEC, but so far it says it has received no reply. Commercial Motor. however, understands that the recent changes at Renault have meant that attending the SEC is no longer a major priority for the company — at least for 1989.

The decision by RTI not to support the SEC is likely to place more pressure on the event's credibility as an alternative to the biennial Birmingham Motor Show (which has attracted its own share of criticism from HGV and trailer manufacturers) especially with the growing success of more specialised shows such as the IRTE exhibition and Tipcon.
