Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

BUS fares in Carlisle and Kendal and places between the two towns are to go up from August 25. An application by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., to increase the fares on a mileage basis was granted by the Northern Traffic Commissioners in Carlisle last week.

The application also affects fares on routes to places like Penrith, Windermere, Keswick and Appleby (Westmorland).

VV. F. D. Walker, for Ribble, said that the company would face a foss of £25,000 without the increased fares.

The objectors, Carlisle Corporation, and Carlisle Trades. Council, said that the fares were unjustified and unfair.

Councillor W. J. Hunter said that the 'application was "the most subtle application Ribble have ever made." He said the company proposed to increase the fares on services that carried a lot of people and reduce fares on some that carried very few people.

Mr. G. W. Duncan, deputy chairman of the Commissioners. said that he felt that the company were quite justified in making the change in fares. Also that a proposal by the corporation to make the children's fare exactly half of the adult fare, not to the nearest penny, was "not a practical proposal."

The maximum increase will not exceed ld. for single fares up to Is. or 2d. for single fares of Is. Id. and upwards. •
