TWO axle designs will be exhibited by the Moss Gear Co., Ltd., for the first time at the Commercial Motor Show next month. One of these is a heavy-duty two-speed double-drive bogie, and the other is a series of double-reduction axles available either rigid or steered and with
either disc or drum brakes. ..
The new bogie axles have individual load ratings of 10.7 tons (24,000 lb.) and a maximum permissible input-torque rating of 4,680 lb.-ft. Both axles of the bogie ate basically the same single-speed units, but the leading axle carries twospeed and third-differential gearing, by which means ratios of 6.9 and 8.4 to .1 are given. The gear-change and differential-lock mechanisms are vacuum operated, and the axles are equipred with air-operated 15.5-in. x 7-in, earn brakes.
It is known that at least one heavygoods chassis with this new bogie will be at the Show. This application will have a two-spring suspension layout.
The double reduction axles have hypoid-bevel primary gearing, with epicyclic secondary reductions in the hubs. The overall length of both types of axle is 92.5 in., with a track of 75 in., and the hubs are designed for 12-stud wheels of the 8.00T-24 (2.5-in, offset) type. The rigid rear axle is suitable for a static loading at the tyres of II tons, whilst the rating for the steerable axle is 5.25 tons: Both axles have an input-torque rating of 1,800 lb.-ft.
Other Moss exhibits will include 6and 7-ton spiral-bevel driving axles, a 10-ton trailer axle, a five-speed gearbox and various rear axle gears.
