THE new test in the final of the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition this year is to be based on vehicle position ing. in this test each driver will be required to dislodge coloured balls from stands in a set sequence—the balls to be knocked from the stands with the nearside front wheel of each vehicle.
In the new test, as in others, the time factor will be taken into account, penalties being incurred when time taken is greater than the standard for the class.
The other three tests scheduled for Coventry on September 16 will be those seen in the heats held in various parts of the country, The Commercial Motor understands, however, that there are to be a number of minor adjustments to these. The width-judging test, for example, is to be made slightly more difficult.
Further, in the controversial loading bay test, three forward moves will be allowed—although a penalty will be incurred for each forward move taken. It appears, too, that reversing into the bay on the vision side will not be allowed in the final. This fnanoeuvre, it will be remembered, was allowed in certain of the heats.
There will be no route test or highway code test in the final. The safest cab competition, too, is to be suspended this year.
