The demand for a powerful multi-purpose high-pressure cleaner which is simple to operate and inexpensive to run is said to be met with the latest product from Warwick Pump and Engineering, Called the Warwick 5000 Super, this is a high-pressure hot-water/steam cleaner with a delivery rate of 2gal per minute of hot or cold water at a pressure of 500 psi.
One switch only controls the machine-----operating both burner and pump. By adjusting the selector lever the machine can give a varying output to enable a combination of treatments to be given to a particular surface; the temperature of the output can be increased through to boiling point to produce steam at 250 psi.
The 5000 Super has a built-in 5gal-capacity detergent tank and an adjustable metering device which gradually adds cleaning fluid or other chemicals to the water or steam up to a 20 to 1 ratio. The steam coil is 100ft. long of 0.875in. diameter steel tube. It is heated by a paraffinor gas-oil-fired burner and the water pump is a twin-piston unit powered by a 1 hp motor.
The machine has an integral 20gal water tank which is enough for 10 minutes' operation when a continuous water supply is not available.
A built-in safety device is a special switch which comes into operation and automatically shuts down the burner if a fault develops or the water supply fails. There is also a pop-type safety valve and a special unloader device which protects the pump and acts as a relief valve.
Mounted on a two-wheel trolley, the machine is 5ft. 2in. long, 2ft. Bin, wide and 2ft. 8in. deep. Total running cost is said to be about 4s. per hour.

Torque wrench
The Keen 150 torque wrench which has been added to the range of hand tools marketed by Fry's (Crawley) gives readings from 0 to 150 ft.lb.
A pointer rod is fitted to the head of the wrench with the operating bar and remains stationary while the bar bends under the load applied. It extends almost to the handle, lying over the scale; the torque applied is indicated by the point reached on the scale.
Both bar and pointer rod are of chrome-vanadium steel, chrome plated and there is a double-headed 0.5in. square drive. The hand grip is of moulded polypropylene which is shatterproof and resistant to solvents such as oil and petrol. Rust inhibitor
Tests carried out by Ford are said to have proved that Motorstor preservative oil can prevent rust and corrosion forming on internal ferrous-metal surfaces of engines, gearboxes and axles during storing for a minimum of 2 years.
Manufactured by Astor Petrochemicals, Motorstor is a low-viscosity liquid containing both volatile and contact inhibitors compatible with all fuels and lubricating oils. It is supplied in 20oz high-pressure (65 psi) aerosol containers with extension nozzles. Bulk quantities in five and 40gal drums are also available.

Wheel glove
What is claimed to be the first British commercial vehicle steering-wheel glove is now being made,by Freeline.
Sizes from 19in. to 21.5in. are obtainable, the material used being heavy-duty cotton-lined Vinyl double-backed for added strength. To ensure a neat finish the stitches holding the glove to the wheel are hidden.

Cartoons
Two special cartoon series have been prepared by Smitt Cartoons as an aid to publicizing the changes to decimal currency and 5.1. metric units within companies. They can be used in published material, on posters and as illustrations for instruction sessions and so on.
For decimalization, a series of pocket cartoons has been developed featuring a character known as Decimal Dick while the more complex subject of metrication is dealt with in a strip cartoon series with "Metric Mick" and "Imperial Ivor" the old Imperial units.
Charges for using the cartoons are up to £3 3s according to company size: special drawings can be made. A large stock already exists and six new drawings are being published every three months.

Snow tyre
Van-size remould tyres designed for use in conditions of deep snow are now being made by Kenning Tyre Services in its Chesterfield factory. Ice studs can be fitted for extra grip on ice and the tread pattern incorporates square recesses in which studs can be positioned.
Cross-ply construction only is available, there being four sizes-5.90-13, 6.40-13, 5.60-15 and 6.40-15—tubed or tubeless.

Clip on panel
An auxiliary-switch panel which clips on to its mounting bracket and which breaks away if caught by a driver's legs in an accident has been introduced by Lucas. The panel will stand the odd knock or two but the fact that a severe blow can cause the two parts of the accessory to separate ensures that the severity of injury in the event of an accident can be reduced.
There are no sharp edges on the plastics moulding of the panel which has a black "crinkle" finish. Wiring is particularly simple as the panel can be lowered, wired up and clipped back into position without the difficulty of fitting screws and bolts.

Material depositing
A process enabling most engineering materials to be deposited on to other surfaces or fabricated into components with advantages of speed, cost and flexibility has been developed by Associated Engineering Developments. Called plasma spraying, the process uses a special gum, a control console and a power supply unit.
Plasma is the term used to describe gas which has been raised to such a high temperature that it ionizes and becomes electrically conductive. In the case of plasma spraying, the plasma is created by an electric arc burning in the nozzle of the gun. The arc gas is formed into a plasma jet as it emerges from the nozzle.
The material to be deposited is in powder form, particles introduced into the jet melting and striking the workpiece at high velocity to produce a strongly adhering coating. A particular advantage in some applicatic.-& t .3 that the workpiece remains relatively cool whereas in flame spraying the workpiece is enveloped by a high-intensity flame which can cause severe distortion.
The plasma gun developed by Associated Engineering is compact, measuring only 2.5in. long, and is capable of continuous operation. Typical electricity consumption is 500amp at 40V dc and currents of 700amp can be used intermittently. Design features include easily changed electrodes, a wide range of nozzle configurations, full insulation and easily adjustable rear electrode to maintain alignment. The gun can be used with argon, nitrogen, helium and hydrogen or a combination of these gases.
A range of control consoles is available. Each can be made fully automatic and the dc powersupply unit is designed to run off normal three-phase supply. A range of accessories is available to users of the plasma-spraying equipment and a comprehensive application, design and installation service is incorporated.

Electric tachometer
The latest Venture instruments introduced by Smiths Industries are electronic tachometers which are claimed to give an accuracy better than 1 per cent. They are designed for industrial use and are similar in concept to the recently announced electric tachometers; many of the front-end components of the two types are interchangeable.
Models are offered with round bezels of 2.5, 4, 6 and 10in. diameter, or with 2.5, 4 and Sin. square bezels. Like other Venture electronic tachometers they are "non-contacting"pick-up heads generate the input signals. Elimination of the need for a take-off drive means that the tachometers are more flexible in use than mechanical types and problems of additional wear or lubrication are not introduced.

Air-cooled diesel
Introduction of a new up-to-2 bhp air-cooled diesel by Fetter gives the firm a range of lighi weight engines ranging from 1. to 20 bhp at speeds from 1,50 to 3,600 rpm.
The latest engine is the BA which is air-cooled and output i from 13.5 bhp to 20 bhp z speeds from 1,800 to 3,00 rpm. It is designed for use drivin generator sets, water pump: compressors and so on.

Pyrene cleaners
At the beginning of April the Specialized and Maintenance Chemicals Department of Pyrene became fully operational. Its purpose is to promote the sales of chemicals including vehicle cleaning products, representing a diversification from the existing programme of the Pyrene Metal Finishing Division.
First products from the new department are Pyroclense vehicle cleaners and the 2,000 range of products for internal cleaning of tankers. The latter chemicals include industrial paint strippers also, A demonstration was given recently of Pyroclense 1212 which is intended specifically as an aluminium cleaner and brightener. This product can safely be used over painted sections of a light-alloy body but does not have the same cleaning efficiency here as on the aluminium. This was shown on the demonstration when applying 1212 as a foam and rinsing off removed "soil" efficiently from the light-alloy but left white stains on the paintwork; to provide a perfect result, brushing has to be employed on painted surfaces to make full use of the shampooing constituent in the chemical, A feature of 1212 is that it will remove aluminium oxide from a body with no etching of the alloy surface and that it will not affect the paint or glass— problems with some cleaners of the same type. It can be applied as a liquid or foam (with special equipment that can be recommended by Pyrene) and is economical in use. Dilution rate is one part of 1212 to 1 to 8 parts of water by volume according to the condition of the body being cleaned and the cleaning process used (brush or spray machine).
Three other products in the Pyroclense range of interest to vehicle users are 1400. 1100 and 1044. A normal detergent cleaner, 1100 is for use in standard brush type washing plants but 1400 is a stronger chemical and can be used with spray units. Like Pyroclense 1212, 1400 is applied to the soiled vehicle, left for a few minutes and then rinsed off, the chemical getting under the "soil" to remove it. In addition to these exterior cleaners there is also Pyroclense 1044 for cleaning vehicle chassis. It is applied without dilution and after being on the surface for a few minutes is flushed off taking dirt and grease away with it.
In the 2,000 range of chemicals for cleaning the interior of road tanks, it is said that compositions can be supplied for removing the residue of any product normally carried in a tank through the use of a Butterfield spinner to distribute the chemical. The company gives as examples of what can be done. the cleaning out of tanks which had been carrying indigo-blue dye and which later held white spirit which did not become discoloured and the removal of a Latex coating from inside tanker-containers prior to whisky being carried.
