• Northumberland County Council has named a two man watchdog team to check on hauliers who overload their vehicles.
The team-—thought to be the first of its sort in the country—has been set up under
Section 63 (3) (c) of the Transport Act 1968 which allows local authorities to object to the granting of operators' licences.
The two are Mr Clement Hurley, the Clerk of the Council, and Mr Cyril Arlidge, chief weights and measures inspector. They are to consider objecting to the renewal of licences for operators who have built up a record of convictions for overloading over the last five years.
Mr Arlidge said one company had had more than fifty convictions, and it obviously felt it had gained more from overloading than it had lost in fines.
