WIDENING interest in protecting road
YY transport against thieves was reported when the vehicles security committee met in London on Monday. It was also announced that since the observer corps started operating in 1962, 34 vehicles (20 loaded, 14 empty) had been recovered.
Discussions have been held in Hertfordshire with a view to introducing some sort of vehicle security scheme, while Kent and Surrey have expressed interest in the extension of the London observer corps into these counties. Bootle, Hull, Liverpool, Manchester and Norwich were also mentioned as places where vehicle security schemes were under consideration.
It is understood that an embryo scheme exists for the start of discussions on a nationwide plan for combating transport thefts.
The London meeting on Monday decided to press vehicle manufacturers to offer security devices as optional extras; this suggestion has been made before.
MAY 4 FOR PAY RISE THE increase of about four per cent in L haulage pay will take effect on May 4, the Minister of Labour having set this date after giving formal approval to the Wages Council's R.H.(77) proposals.
The new rates will be embodied in Order R.H.(78) and employers should receive copies of this on or about April 29.
