• Cement giant Blue Circle's next financial results will be boosted to the tune of millions of pounds by its latest round of transport cost-cutting.
As Blue Circle Industries was announcing its latest results, Blue Circle Cement national marketing manager Tony Edye said depot closures, combined with the loss of 550 jobs-20% of the workforce— will save £25m. The company made a pre-tax profit of £50.5m on a £799m turnover in the six months to 30 June.
Since March Blue Circle Cement has made moves to reduce its transport costs by closing 13 of its 23 depots, shedding 57 driving jobs and switching 750,000 tonnes a year from rail to road (CM 26 November 1992).
