Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I couldn't help smiling to myself at the comment made by The Hawk (CM July 15) that the seats on trams were slatted and unsprung. So they were at one time, but by the mid-thirties they were mostly fully upholstered and therefore very comfortable, at least in London.

As for breaking down, my recollection is that they very rarely did, but of course unlike road traffic, a breakdown caused immediate chaos.

The trams did a good job providing cheap and reliable transport for the masses, and we had much to thank them for, so please no more laughs from The Hawk at their expense. Let him take a ride in Blackpool's trams. E. E. CAMPBELL, Bromley, Kent.
