IMPORTS of commercial vehicles — 4,557 — were 32.89 per cent higher last month than in August 1976. And importers gained 20.48 per cent of the market, compared with 16.54 per cent in August last year.
The August figures, just released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, show that British Leyland led in sales of heavy lorries and artics with 23.29 per cent of the market from Ford (21.52 per cent), Bedford (17.73 per cent) and Chrysler (8.13 per cent). Sales in this sector were up 10.71 per cent on August 1976.
Leyland also led bus and coach sales with 54.05 per cent of the market ahead of Bedford 29.19 per cent and Ford 13.59 per cent.
And Leyland led the light van and pick-up sector with 33.33 per cent ahead of Bedford (25.25 per cent) and Ford (21.78 per cent). This sector showed sales 10.25 per cent higher than the 1976 figure.
In the medium range, Ford, with 38.48 per cent of sales, had more than double Leyland's share of the market (17.15 per cent). Bedford had 13.85 per cent and Chrysler were on 5.63 per cent.
