NEARLY 17.000 vehicles sold so far under the Transport Act, 1953, are held by some 5,500 hauliers, according to records kept by The Commercial Motor.

This week, the assignment of many more ex-British Road Services lorries is reported.

SCOTLAND A large number of vehicles has been transferred by Central Garage (Bathgate), Ltd., Bathgate. Three vehicles, including an articulated outfit (13 tons), have been made over to Messrs. Russell of Bathgate, Bathgate;• three lorries (161 tons) to John Hunter and Sons (Transport), Ltd., Airdrie; three (8 tons) to Halley Coaches (Bathgate), Ltd., Bathgate; one (82 tons) to Mr. William D. Tucker, Kirknewton; two (I31 tons) to John Alexander and Sons, Ltd., Coathridge; one (3 tons) to Dunvegan Supply and Transport Co., Kingsmuir, Forfar; one (3 tons) to Mr. Peter Halley, Crieff; one (3 tons) to Messrs. John Birrell and Sons, Markinch; one (3 tons) to Messrs. West's Transport, Dunfermline; one (31 tons) to Messrs. John Hutchison and Son, Dunfermline; and -one (3 tons) to Mr. Albert Fyfe, Auchinblae, Messrs. John Hutchison have also made a direct purchase of a lorry weighing 4 tons unladen.

Direct purchases have also been made by Messrs. Rapid Road Transports, Greenock, of a lorry (61 tons); Mr. Kenneth More, Ayr, an articulated outfit (21 tons); John Duncan (Removals), Ltd., Edinburgh, two lorries (12 tons); Mr. Angus M. McGougan, Campbeltown, one (41 tons); Messrs. Kendon Transport, Glasgow, two 451 tons);. Messrs. R. Thomson and Sons. Ladybank, one (7 tons); Mr. Alexander

Kirriemuir, two (6 tons); and Messrs. Spence and Thompson, Milnathort, three (10 tons).

Road Services (Caledonian), Ltd., Dumfries, have taken over four lorries (15 tons) from Mr. Ernest Sanderson, Bearsden, who has also transferred the following: two (6 tons) to A. Smith (Darvel); one (21 tons) to Mrs. R. Allan, klearsden; one (3 tons) to Mrs. M. M. M. Adamson, Falkirk; one (71 tons) to John Macdonald and Co., Glasgow; and one (7 tons) to J. W. Cuthbert and Son, Ltd., Lennoxtown.

Messrs. J. G. Barrack, Aberdeen, have had special A licences granted to them for seven lorries, six of which (221 tons) came from Mr. James G. Barrack, Aberdeen, and the other (51 tons) from Mr. Andrew B. innes, New Pitslig°, The Scottish Licensing Authority has also authorized the assignment of a lorry 431 tons) to Bell and Co. (Transport), Ltd., Edinburgh, by John McIntosh and Son, Ltd., Glasgow; one (3 tons) to Mr. Matthew C. Turnbull, Lockerbie, by J. J. Aitken and Co., Ltd., Kirkcudbright; one (31 tons) to Messrs. D. Robertson and Sons, Inverness, and one (31 tons) to Messrs. Munro and Sons, Alness, both by Mr. John Robertson, Inverness; and one , (21 tons) to Messrs. McGregor and Macdonald, Aberfeldy, by Mr. Daniel Stewart, Blairgowrie.

John McIntosh and Son are left with two lorries (71 tons). Mr. Robertson with one (31 tons), and Mr. Stewart, one (21 tons).

NORTHERN AREA A further nine lorries (32 tons 14 cwt.) have been bought by Messrs. F. W. Robinson and Sons, Feethams Salerooms, Darlington. Five of these have been transferred, two (61 tons) going to Mr. J. K. Bowles, Inglenook, Low Coniscliffe, Darlington; one (2 tons 19 cwt.) to Mr. E. Newcomb, 19 Done Grove, Redear; one (2 tons 18 cwt.) to IL Peacock, Ltd., Norton Junction, Blakiston Lane, Norton.

on-lees; and one (2 tons 19 cwt.) to Mr. J. C. Thompson, Union Hall Farm, Lemington. A. D. Thompson, Ltd.' Strand Street Garage, Sunderland, have bought another three vehicles (2 tons 18 cwt.) and Messrs. J. W. Hodgson Transport, 209 Blackwell Road, Carlisle, three (8 tons 13 cwt.).

Messrs., W. Armstrong and Sons, Bank Top, Prestwick. Ponteland, have had two lorries (6 tons 2 cwt.) made over to them by Mr. E. Waters, 13 Woodleigh Road, Monkseaton.

NORTH-WES1 First purchases have been made by: Messrs.:Gordon Hill and Son, 170 Underwood Lane, Crewe, of two articulated outfits (8 tons); Mr. F. Prescott, 24 Mersey View Road, Halehank, near Widnes, a lorry (21 tons); and Messrs. C. and M. Yates, Shoresfold Farm, Nelstrop Road, Heaton Chapel, Stockport, one (31 tons).

F. Davies (St. Helens), Ltd., Abbey Road, St. Helens, have taken over four lorries and two trailers (271 tons) from A. Rothwell (St. Helens), Ltd., Cleveland Street, Peasley Cross, St. Helens.

"Mr. L. Gleave, Holly Bank, Audlern. neat Crewe, has bought another 27 vehicles. including seven articulated outfits 060 tons). Six of these, including the articulated outfits (282 tons) came from the Warrington Warehousing Co., 54 Market Street, Newton-le-Willows, and the other (21 tons) from Mr. J. Brindley, Hinckley. A lorry 01 tons) has now been transferred to the Clarendon Haulage Co., Church Street Garage, Ribehester, near Preston; one (4 tons) to SandbaCh Transport, Ltd., Malkins Bank, Sandbach; one (21 tons) to Mr. H. Edwards, Sunny Fields, Church Lane, Bicton, near Shrewsbury; five articulated outfits (261 tons) to Lewis Bros. (Minsterley), Ltd.' in the West Midland Traffic Area; and an articulated outfit (62 tons) to Bryte-Wear, Ltd., Wharton Hall, Winsford, Cheshire.

Warrington Warehousing Co., have also made over four lorries (20 tons) to Allisons Transport (Contracts), Ltd., 6 Balfield Road, Dundee; one (51 tons) to Walker i and Son (Hauliers), Ltd., n the East Midland Traffic Area; and one (3 tons) to Messrs. F. and H. Murgatroyd, Cemetery Road, Yeadon. Three other recently purchased lorries (191 tons) have been retained.

Gleave Transport (Audlem), Ltd., of the same address as Mr. Gleave, have taken over six lorries (431 tons) from Mr. T. J. Richardson, 100 Dudley Road East, Oldbury. Mr. Richardson has also sold an articulated outfit (6 tons) to A. Darlington (Transport), Ltd., 52 Downham Road North, Heswall, Cheshire.

Mr. R. N. Richardson, also of 100 Dudley Road East, Oldbury, has sold a lorry (3 tons) to J. W. Ratcliffe and Sons, Ltd., Low Bank Road Garage, Ashton-inMakerfield.

A further eight lorries (411 tons) have gone to T. Guy, Ltd., Black Horse Farm, Burscough. Two of these (97 tons) have been made over to Messrs. Jones Bros., Regent Garage. Deacon Road, Widnes; two (101 tons) to Mr. F. J. Farrell, 47 Liverpool Road, Liverpool, 20; and one (51 tons) to Messrs. McGill's Transport, 84 Albion Street, St. Helens.

Mr. Farrell has sold one of his lorries (5 tons) to Mr. W. J. Dudley, 235 Kingsway, Huyton with Roby, Liverpool.

Messrs. Jones Bras. have transferred vehicles to: Mr. J. amber, 215 Warrington Road, Widnes (two-61 tons); Mr. J. Clarkson, 166 Warrington Road, Penketh, Warrington (one-3 tons); and Mr. T. Shingler, The Poplars, Liverpool Road, Bickerstaffe, near Ormskirk (one-31 tons). Mr. Shingler has also taken over another 'four lorries (131 tons), one of which (3+ tons) came from Mr. S. Walmsley, address not known.

Vehicles have been sold by Mr. Shingler

as follows; two (61 tons) to Mr. T. Sutton, Elulton Done, Church Road, Tarleton, near Preston, and one (3 tons) to Mr. L. E Price, 2 'Deidre Avenue, Widnes. Mr. Price has re-assigned his purchase to the Kingsway Carrying Co., 177 .Kingsway. Widnes.

Other vehicles bought by T. Guy have been transferred as follows: a lorry (4 tons) to Mr. A. T. Sixsinith, 84 Ormskirk Road. Upholland, near Wigan; and two trailers (5 tons) to Heatons Transport (Home Farm 1Mawdesleyl, Ltd.), Dentons Green Garage. Daentons Green Lane, St. Helens.
