Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SEVERAL interesting products figure in a large order which Scammell Lorries, Ltd., Watford, has recently completed for the Newcastle-uponTyne Electric Supply Co., Ltd. The vehicles are for use in connection with the standardization of frequency which

is being carried out by the company under the North-East England Electricity Scheme, 1929.

The order consists of several mobile workshops, four special machinery transporters (two 25-tonners and two 10-tonners) and two cross-country-type rigid six-wheelers.

The workshops are for use on factory sites, at collieries, etc., where alterations are in progress. The basis of these vehicles is the company's articulated-type six-wheeler, the four-cylin J338 dered engine of which develops 80 b.h.p.

The machine tools are mounted in a special body, the platform of the semitrailer portion of the vehicle being suitably reinforced. The sides are in two parts, thus enabling the canopy and platform to be extended.

The tractor portion of the vehicle is required to haul the other machinery carriers, for which purpose it can be detached from the workshop, which is then supported by a number of jacks. Power for lighting the shop, driving the machines and such auxiliary equipment as electric hammers, drills, etc., is supplied by a Parsons 7I4S engine with a 15-kilowatt 220-volt generator.

The machine tool equipment includes a 20-in, dry grinder, a key-seating machine, a 7-in, electric grinder, a corn

hined sensitive and radial drilling machine, a surfacing and screw-cutting lathe, and a shaping machine, in addition to a 10-ewt, jib crane with a radius of 8 ft., and equipped with traversing gear, and a 5-cwt. crane, provided mainly for use with the radial drill.

The rigid six-wheelers are the maker's Pioneer-type crosscountry machines, these being particularly suitable for that Part of the work which calls for the conveyance ofmotors

and electrical gear in rural districts.

in order to accelerate loading or unloading in places where facilities are not available, three special trucks, mounted on wheels that run on rails along the chassis frame, are provided in place of the orthodox type of body. An extension for the rails is carried, and this forms a ramp for securing mil& loading and unloading, the control of the body units being obtained by cable and a power winch mounted in a position behind the driver's cab.

Both the 10-ton and 25-ton machinery transporters have low loading lines and steel platforms, the winch being mounted at the front end. In the case of the larger machines, the semi-trailer has four rear wheels in line, each pair being mounted on an independent short axle, the wheels being free to oscillate. By a simple device the wheels can be removed from the carrier, thus enabling the tailboard to be lowered to form an easy loading ramp.
