TRANSPORT Under Secretary Lynda Chalker left Road Haulage Association conference delegates in no doubt that the Government will go ahead with a weights increase very soon.
Speaking in Torquay last Saturday, she said that David Howell had committed the Government to allowing "fully loaded, heavier lorries" to operate, and said that the Government plans to bring regulations before Parliament "as soon as practicable".
"We are going fast ahead to get the necessary regulations before Parliament, but Parliament must be told first," she said, and added that it was "slightly heartening" that the Conservative conference had been very supportive of an increase in weights, provided it is coupled with environmental safeguards.
"But we will need your continuing support if we are taking regulations through Parliament," she told the hauliers.
