A HERTFORDSHIRE Coui Council experiment reduc and simplifying bus fares in Albans has been successful attracting more passengers I although faros have now turned to almost their origl level, the number of passeng has remained higher than bet the start of the experiment.
The experiment was plan, by the County Transport Coot nation unit with National E Company subsidiary Lond Country and St Albans Council.
Starting from November 1981, fares were reduced fn 17p to 10p and from 28p to 21 The experiment was origing intended to end in January 1E but was extended until Si tember 3 this year at a sligh higher level of 12p and 21 Fares have now become 15p a 30p.
During the experiment, 1 number of passengers rose around 12 per cent. After the fl fare increase, ticket sales I slightly, but in June were between 8 and 10 per ce higher than during the previa year. The fares also increas operational efficiency as fey coins were needed to handled by drivers and passer ors and less change given, a this reduced the time spent bus stops.
The Co-Linty is to continue monitor the level of use of b services in St Albans.
