A HIGHER-powered version of the Leyland TL 11 engine is now available for the Cruiser.

The TL11B in the new 16.23 is rated at 167kW (224bhp) at 2,100rpm compared with the 156kW (209bhp) of the TL11A which continues for the Cruiser 16.21.

In its B form, the engine develops 956Nm (703Ibft) torque at 1,30Orpm, The 16,23 is rated at 35 tonnes gcw and replaces the 34-tonne Cruiser with its Fuller 9509 gearbox, The 18.21 with its Fuller 809 gearbox will continue in production alongside the new 18.23 which features the Fuller RTX 7609 with its Multimesh gearing and a conventional H pattern gear change.

A number of mechanical changes have been made to the TL11B including increasing the thickness of the top deck of the cylinder block to improve the stiffness and gasket-sealing capability.

To improve the cooling, the water jackets in the head have been modified around the exhaust parts and the injectors.

The adoption of a new type of Cooper's backbone head gasket with a silicone bead has improved oil and water retention, according to Leyland.

Further improvements to cylinder head joint integrity have been achieved by the use of flanged nuts with no washers, and the nuts within the rocker box area are capped to prevent any capillary action where the oil could move from the rocker area studs to studs outside the rocker cover.

The most noticeable external difference between the TL11B and the A version Is the revised timing case which allows the power steering pump to be located on the right hand side of the engine for improved assembly and service access. The rear axle is the AHD 1335, which is a new light derivative of the Guy-derived Albion heavy duty family which includes the 1340 design featured in Roadtrain.

Both the 1335 and the 1340 share a similar casing, with the former having a smaller diameter driving head and a three planet hub reduction gear compared with the five-planet system used on the Roadtrain axle.
