IN AN ATTEMPT to get a 22-tonne-plus payload/body allowance for an eight-wheeler, Leyland has introduced a new bogie for the Scammall Constructor 8.
The bogie is based on the twospring unit developed by Scammell and used for many years on vehicles such as the Routeman.
The Mk 2 features tapered leaf springs, improved U-bolt clamping and tie-rod fixings and is claimed to be approximately 120kg (2651b) lighter than the Mk 1 bogie.
Another weight-saving item on the latest Constructor is the Spicer SST 8010 gearbox with an aluminium casing.
This is the 1,085Nm (800Ibft) capacity version of the SST 1010 gearbox already fitted to Constructor 8 and Roadtrain models. Including the aluminium housing, the SST 8010 (also featured on the Seddon Atkinson 301) is 86kg (190Ib) lighter than the heavier-duty version.
A ten-speed splitter unit, the SST 8010 has a wider ratio spread than the 1010 with a deeper crawler gear and a higher overdrive top ratio.
Together with the changes to the bogie and gearbox, Leyland has also announced the availability of aluminium wheels, aluminium fuel tanks and lightweight batteries to reduce the unladen weight of the Constructor by approximately 300kg (6001 b).
