NICK LESTER, Transport 2000's director since 1980, is widening his responsibilities from April next year when he takes on the additional task of chairing the London Transport Passengers' Corn m ittee.
His appointment, in place of Greater London Conservative Association chairman Ian McLeod, was confirmed last week by the Greater London Council transport committee in spite of Conservative opposition. Although a Labour Party member, Mr Lester holds no office in it.
He told CMthat he hopes to be able to widen the LTPC's field of activities by bringing it closer to the passengers whose interests it represents, and holding meetings throughout the LT area. The committee will be reconstituted next year, after a press advertising campaign is organised next month to seek new members. At present, another Transport 2000 staff member, Jonathan Roberts, is an LTPC member.
LTPC is the statutory consumers' watchdog body set up by the 1969 Transport (London) Act.
