ROAD safety will be the main theme of the annual conference of the Road Haulage Association to be held tt Eastbourne from October 26 to 28. Four papers on different aspects of road iafety will be read during the morning tnd afternoon of Tuesday, October 27, titer. the inaugural address from the kssociation's chairman, Mr. A. R. Butt.

The first paper will be presented by Mr. J. S. Orme, Under Secretary, Ministry of Transport, and will deal with he Ministry's work. Mr. Walter Hall, thairman of the heavy trailer section of he Society of Motor Manufacturers Ind Traders, will talk about the construeion of vehicles. Mr. Frank Collins, a nember of the West Midland Maintenince Advisory Committee, will speak on he work of this body.

In the afternoon Mr. G. Grime, deputy eader of the traffic and safety division althe Road Research Laboratory, will ;ive a paper on the construction and !quipping of highways for safety. This viii be followed by a discussion of the 011owing three resolutions:— " That the policy of building threelaned roads be discontinued as quickly as possible." Proposed by Mr. G. Reader (Reader Bros. Ltd., Hull). Seconded by Mr. E. Willmott (Willmott's Motors, Howden Ltd.); 'Yorkshire tflull) Area.

" That this Conference, fully supporting the views of the highway § and vehicles committee of the Association, is dissatisfied with the low efficiency of the secondary braking system of some heavy goods vehicles and requests the introduction of legislation requiring the manufacture of the braking systems of all new vehicles to conform to specified and adequate standards." Proposed by Mr. P. R. May, May's Motors (Transport) Ltd„ Metropolitan and S.E. Area. Seconded by Mr. J. E. Kirby (Federated Road Transport Services Ltd., Leicester) 7 East Midland Area.

" That a certificate of fitness should he required for every goods vehicle and that such vehicles should be subject to periodical inspection." Proposed by Mr. A. C. W. Neely (Alma Garage (Aston) Ltd., Birmingham). Seconded-lay Mr. J. Male (Male and Sons (Pensnett) Ltd.. Brierly Hill): West Midland Area.

On the following morning a brain's trust will be held under the chairmanship of Mr. Macdonald Robley, The panel will consist of Lord Gosford, chairman of the British Road Federation; Lord Lindgren, a Labour peer and treasurer of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association; Mr. T. D. Corpe, the eminent authority on road transport law, and Sir Richard Bonallaek, chairman and managing director of Bonallack and Sons Ltd.

The main social function will be a banquet and ball on the evening of Wednesday. October 28. The speakers will be Mr. Butt and the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Bernard Raven.

The banquet and ball will be held in the Winter Gardens but the business sessions and other social functions will take place in the Grand Hotel, which is to be the conference headquarters.
