MR. JAMES. BARRIE, a past national chairman of the Road Haulage Association, has now been discharged from hospital after seven weeks, and is convalescing. He is unlikely to be able to resume his full duties until the end of the year.

MR. H. R. J. DE KEYSER, southern manager of Blue Peter Retreads, Ltd., for the past 12 years, has been appointed general sales manager. Ma. J. A. B. LLOYD-PHILIPPS has become south-western sales manager, and MR. W. Mittman, south-eastern sales manager.

MR. T. S. ROBERTS, a nominee of the British Transport Commission, has been appointed a member of the Transport Users' Consultative Committee for Yorkshire. He is the chief docks manager at Hull and succeeds MR. H. L. HOPKINS, who has retired from the Commission.

Ma. T. W. H. GAILEY, who, as already announced, becomes an executive director of the Tilling Group on January 1, has accepted certain other appointments within the Group. He is to become chairman and director of Hants and Dorset Motor Services, Ltd., and the Southern Vectis Omnibus Co., Ltd., and a director of Eastern National Omnibus Co., Ltd., the Brighton. Hove and District Omnibus Co., Ltd., the United Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., Tillings Transport (B.T.C.). Ltd., and the Thames Valley Traction Co., Ltd., on that date.

GAS BOARD'S DRIVER TEST

MORE than 300 entrants took part in the "Driver of the Year" competition sponsored by the Glasgow and western divisions of the Scottish Gas Board. The final took place last weekend, when 16 drivers and their vehicles

engaged in a route test, four manoeuvring tests and questions on the Highway Code.

The premier award, a silver cup presented by the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., went to a Glasgow driver, Mr. W. Connell, driving a Thames Trader.

Intercity Apply for More Flexibility

HAVINHAVING acquired a number of special-A licensed vehicles, the Intercity Transport and Trading Co., Ltd., Cumbernauld, successfully applied to Mr. W. F. Quin, Scottish Licensing Authority, at Glasgow last week, to vary the conditions of their ordinary licences to permit greater flexibility of operation.

They desired to consolidate under a smaller number of different licence terms, but their representative, Mr. J. Taylor, stated that they proposed to carry on the same kinds of work with the same vehicles.

Mr. Quin wondered whether Intercity would derive bigger carrying capacity, but was assured by Mr. A. C. Carroll, managing director, That the company would not. An undertaking was also given to Mr. D. Brown, for the British Transport Commission, that the concern's semi-trailers would not be employed more advantageously.

It was suggested that the normal-user terms should be precisely assessed, and agreed that operations be divided according to the following percentages: 17, Scotland; 40, Midlands; 43, London and east.

NORTHERN DEPOT FOR ENOR

THE seventh branch to be opened in the United Kingdom by Stenor, Ltd., will be at 16 Blackfriars Road, Salford, 3. The depot will serve motor agents and factors in Lancashire, Cheshire, Flint, Denbigh, North Staffs and the Isle of Man.
