British Manufacturers A STEADY increase in the are Making Headway 1-1 numbers of British motor in Overseas Markets . vehicles that are exported is continuing to take place. ACCURATE centring of the job on a magnetic chuck can sometimes be an extremely simple operation. If the current (or magnetic force) be switched on and off again, the work will be held in position by residual magnetism. Then, by lightly touching the periphery with a blunt tool as it rotates, it can be moved on the chuck face, and it will be found that it will automatically centre itself.

The Effect of DetoQOME interesting notes on the nation on Oil Conkieffect of detonation on oil

sum otion consumption are contained in

the S.A.E. Journal for September. These were obtained during service tests, when, in a number of instances, the consumption increased for no apparent reason. Upon investigation it was discovered that the differences occurred only when symptoms of knock were present. Experimental detonation was then caused in two ways : first, by advancing the spark excessively, and, secondly, by altering the fuel. The results showed an increase in

oil consumption of from 20 to 25 per cent. by advancing the spark from 28 degrees before top dead centre until detonation occurred, which was at between 37 and 45 degrees. In the second case the spark advance was kept at 35 degrees, and the results showed a higher oil consunipfion for the lower octane fuels, particularly when the octane number was below 40 to 48.

PLTBLICIW was given recently to a case at Hendon when a van driver was fined £2 by the magistrates for a first motoring offence of a trivial character. Mr. A. 3.

Pryor, in a letter to The Star, said that . . knowing something of the ways of local Benches, through having to spend over £100 on getting a mad decision quashed, I feel I would like to help the youngster involved in the case reported. . . ." Mr. Pryor showed a practical sympathy by sending a cheque for £3—" being £2 fine and whatever he was 'soaked' for costs." We cannot say whether other defendants at Hendon have organized a search for the generous Mr. Pryor I
