• Sentences totalling over 11 years have been passed on five men at Winchester Crown Court following the trial of several former employees of Cranes and Commercials (Exports). Judge Ian Hill said they had been involved in a national and international network for the disposal of stolen lorries and other machinery valued at nearly £3 million (CM 6-12 August 1987).

Trevor Slowen, 53, of Greenhill Farm, Baybridge, Owlesbury, and Mark Slowen, 31, of Winchester Road, Southampton, pleaded guilty to con spiring to receive goods, and were both jailed for two years. Trevor Slowen was ordered to pay £10,000 costs. Mark Slowen was ordered to pay .25,000. He was also given a £154) fine with seven days to default and disqualified for three months for reckless driving.

Neil Slowen, 26, of Winn Road, Southampton, who admitted seven sample charges of handling stolen engines and gearboxes, was jailed for nine months and ordered to pay £2,500 costs.

Robert Alexander, 40, of Bermondsey, London, and Leslie Pegrum, 41, of Norbury, London, who also admitted conspiring to receive stolen property, were jailed for four years and two-and-a-half years, respectively. Alexander was also told to pay 210,000 costs.
