• Labour shortages and traffic congestion represent the biggest threat to British road hauliers in the 1990s, warns a new report on road freight by Midland Bank.
Midland predicts that the Channel Tunnel and the Single European Market will concentrate business among major operators able to offer the major investment in technology and depots needed to provide distribution throughout the SEM.
Road freight remains a very risky business. Midland warns: 25% of road haulage businesses fail each year, and it sees no prospect of the failure rate declining.
