• Many roads will remain nogo areas for 40-tonners even after they are allowed into Bri:ain in 1999, and the number of anes on some routes may have to be cut so that the heavier vehicles can use them, MPs were told last week.

This is because many widges will still be unsafe for 4.0-tonners, said roads and trafic minister Robert Atkins. 'The increase from 38 tonnes :o 40 tonnes (on 31 December 1998) will require about 400 xidges to be assessed."

Atkins told MPs that the EIGV parc has fallen from 506,000 in 1979 to 462,000 last year — despite a 25% increase n freight carried. He attributed :his to the introduction of 38.onners in 1984.
