Roads and Traffic Minister Robert Atkins made his own contribution last week in a reference to Labour's mild-mannered transport spokesman John Prescott, MP for Kingston upon Hull. Atkins called Prescott "Humbermouth" (presumably unaware that Prescott has for some time been fondly known by fellow parliamentarians as "Mouth of the Humber").

Roll on the next debate on trucks and the environment . . . "Yeah? Go on, say that again. . my gang's bigger than your gang. . ." etc.

Is it any wonder that we take these debates so seriously.
