Steyr's reign in the UK lasted only one year.

January 1988: Steyr is poised to become the 12th heavy goods vehicle manufacturer to sell in Britain. Otto Voisard, Steyr's chief executive, says the range will be unveiled at the October Motor Show. June 1988: Six months after declaring its intention to enter the UK HGV market, Steyr reveals its line-up to Commercial Motor. It comprises two 38-tonners, two 17-tonners and two 13-tonners. September 1988:

Despite having no stock, no orders and no dealers, Steyr Trucks (UK) officially sets up shop. New managing director Cliff Groves says eight dealers will be in place by the Motor Show.

May 1989: Daf talks about "cooperation" and "synergy" with Steyr, but denies any rumours of a takeover.

September 1989: MAN takes an 80% stake in Steyr. Rumours abound, but it looks as if Steyr UK will be wound down. Worried customers cancel orders.

November: Following a meeting with 17 UK dealers, Groves announces that imports of Steyr trucks will stop. Steyr UK's Milton Keynes offices will close with the loss of 19 jobs. "It was my baby and I am very sad it will no longer exist," says Groves.
