• Fare increases of 10% on average will take effect on London buses on 4 February, following a compromise between Transport Secretary Cecil Parkinson and London Regional Transport.
LRT was pushing for a 15% rise which Parkinson would no accept for fear of bolstering inflation; he advocated an increase of only 7.5%, in line with inflation.
Short-hop bus fares in the city centre will increase by 25% to 50p and children's weekday travel before 9.30am will rise 5p to 35p. Most othei bus fares will rise by 10p.
