Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T" prospect of future commercial vehicle tyres in the 12-ply rating category actually having only six, four or two plies is held out by development work being carried out in the United States by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. The method used is to increase the cord size as the number of plies is decreased.

The larger cord, known as giant cord, is stronger and more durable than normal-sized cord, and it is claimed that

the strength of four or more ordinary•plies can be given by one ply of giant cord fabric. The reduction in the number of actual plies results in less bulky construction and hence a reduced tendency for heat to be built up in service. This in turn makes it possible to use longer-wearing rubber compounds

in the tread, since their tendency to generate more heat can be counterbalanced by the cooler-running body of the tyre.

Two-ply tyres of similar construction have steadily become increasingly common on new cars in the United States. It is estimated that 80 per cent of 1963 models will have tyres of this kind, and that almost all of the 1964 models will be so equipped.
