Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Short-wheelbase Model Which can Accommodate End-tipping Bodywork ortTorm the Tractor Portion of an Articulated Six wheeler Outfit

/N addition to the range of vehicles with four and six-cylindered engines produced by Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., Adderley Park, Birmingham, a new short-wheelbase chassis nominally rated at 3 tons is now in production. The chassis has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of two types of vehicle. Its short wheelbase makes it eminently suitable for carrying end-tipping bodywork, whilst the robust layout of the frame and the rear axle provides an ample margin of safety for the chassis to form the tractor part of an articulated six-wheeled 6-ton outfit.

In general design, the two chassis are identical, but the gearbox of the tipper accommodates an hydraulic pump for the power operation of the tipping gear. As the unladen weight of the tipPer does not exceed 2 tons 10 cwt., the annual tax is, therefore, 230, and the vehicle can travel at the maximum legal speed of 30 m.p.h.

Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd-, does not undertake to supply the complete articulated six-wheeled outfit. Only the tractor unit is produced by this concern, but it recommends purchasers to collaborate with concerns which specialize in the production of semitrailers. The products of J. Brockhouse and Co., Ltd., West Bromwich, Carrimore Six Wheelers, Ltd., London, N., and the Truck and Tractor Appliance Co., Ltd., Trafford Park, Man-. chester, are approved by the maker of the tractor chassis.

e48 The price of the four-wheeled chassis and cab is 2257 when powered by a four-cylindered engine and 2265 with a six-cylindered unit. It is possible to produce a complete outfit, with a nondetachable semi-trailer, the unladen weight of which comes within the limit of 3 tons, and thus qualifiesfor the annual tax of 235.

Although the layout of the chassis may be summed up in the rather orthodox phrase, "planned on straight-. forward lines," there is a large number of special features which makes the specification one of the most advanced of its type. For example, the power unit is mounted on rubber, and thermostat water control and fully automatic ignition are provided, in addition to a thermo-starter carburetter, whilst at small extra cost a governor in the carburetter can be obtained, which regulates the speed to a set maximum. Furthermore, progressive springing, a 12-volt electrical system, self-cancelling direction indicators, a chromium-plated front bumper and asa all-steel cab with winding windows are provided.

The chassis itself is built up on the principle which is employed in the other models of this marque. Deep side-members are employed, with an effective A-shaped bracing amidships ; the forward arms of the central bracing are carried ?.long the side members for' a considerable distance, thereby providing a reinforcement at the point where the greatest stresses are imposed.

The wheelbase of both the tipper and tractor chassis is 9 ft. 9 Ms., whilst the track of both machines is approximately 5 ft. 2i ins, at the front and 6 ft. 3 ins, at the rear.

For a vehicle with such moderate dimensions the body space provided is extraordinarily large. This has been obtained by " compacting " the bonnet and scuttle. The engine has been moved 6 ins, farther forward than in the normal-control type of MorrisCommercial vehicle, whilst the rear of the cab has been advanced by 18 ins.; wells formed on each side of the dash panel accommodate the driver's and passenger's feet. At the same time, engine accessibility is unaffected.

As has already been indicated, alternative engines are available, the swept volume of each type being almost identical, whilst 55 b.h.p. is delivered at the flywheel of both the " six" and the "four." The former has bore and stroke dimensions of 82 mm. and 110 . ram. respectively (3,485 c.c.), whilst in the " four" these dimensions are 100 mm. and 112 ram., the swept volume being 3,591 c.c.

In each type the crankshaft is statically and dynamically balanced, and there is a main bearing between each pair of throws. Side-by-side valves are cperated by a camshaft driven from the crankshaft by a duplex roller chain, the tention of which can he maintained by means of an adjustable dynamo mounting.

A full-pressure lubrication system incorporating a gear-type pump forces the lubricant to the main journals of the crankshaft, and thence by drilled • passages to the crankpins. A large cartridge-type filter is incorporated in the supply line, whilst the suction side of the pump is also protected.

Both the four-cylindered and sixcylindered units follow closely upon the design of the normal Morris-Commercial engine. There is a thermostat in the water system and an improved pump gland, whilst a Soles thermostarter carburetter provides automatic control of the starting-mixture strength and avoids any necessity of a hand choke to be fitted. A governor type of Soles carburetter can be obtained at an extra cost of £2. This instrument, which includes thermostatic control of the mixture strength from the engine temperature, has a governing device which is sealed and is tamperproof. Fuel is fed to the instrument by an Autovac from an 11-gallon tank mounted on the off side of the chassis.

A single-plate clutch with a freemember of 11-in, diameter is built unitwise with a four-speed gearbox, the casing for which is of cast iron. The teeth of the highest indirect gear are of double helical formation, engagement being effected by a dog clutch. The indirect ratios provided in the gearbox are 6.978, 3.368 and 1.829 to 1 for the forward speeds, and 7.971 to 1 for reverse. The standard rear-axle ratio for the tipper chassis is 6.75 to 1, whilst a similar ratio and an alternative of 7.25 to 1 are available for the tractor.

Although the design of the front axle follows generally the lines of that of the Morris-Commercial C-type range, a wider track is provided, so that the turning circle may be as small as possible. The rear axle incorporates an overhead worm drive and a four-star bevel differential, whilst the half-shafts are of the fully floating type.

The Lockheed hydraulic braking system is employed, internal-expanding shoes being applied by the pedal to 14-in.-diameter front drums and 16-in.diameter rear drums, whilst the hand lever, placed on the left-hand side of the driver, operates, by a mechanical hook-up, shoes in the rear drums. The drums themselves are of a special nickel-alloy cast iron. The tipping lorry has 32-in. by 6-in. reinforced heavy-service tyres, whilst on the tractor, truck-type tyres are supplied, with twins at the rear.

The tipping gear is of the Weston hydraulic type manufactured by Sunsaloon Bodies, Ltd., Greet, Birming

ham. In the mounting of the tipping barrel, care has been taken to allow freedom of movement in all directions to avoid the possibility of a jam occurring. There is a spherical mount

ing on the chassis for the ram, and the. trunnion is carried on the body in such a manner that it is able to swing angularly.

The body is 8 ft. 3 ins. long by 6 ft. 6 ins, wide inside, and it has 1-ft. 10-in, sides and tailboards. Most important from an operator's point of view is the fact that the vehicle is guaranteed to be capable of dealing with a load of 41 tons.

The body platform is lined with heavy-gauge steel and the sides are hinged and can be detached. The tailboard can he made to swing from the top or bottom and the hydraulic gear gives an angle of tip of approximately 50 degrees. The complete outfit costs £317 with the four-cylindered engine and with the six-cylindered unit the price is £325.

With a Prockhouse Kwikfiks attachment the boxvan costs 2568 10s., whilst as a platform lorry the price is 4475.
