Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Transport lawyers are questioning the legality of alleged moves by vehicle examiners to force drivers to put their trucks through a full Dip test after they have been issued with prohibition notices.

Transport lawyer Jonathan Lawton has recently been approached by operators who have been told to put their trucks through an MoT, rather than a standard prohibition clearance inspection. "They are requiring vehicles to undertake a full MoT more often than the legal re quirement of once every 12 months," says Lawton.

One of the operators which reported the practice to Lawton, Crick-based Dukes Transport, says waiting for an annual test cost him 2.400 per day.

Transport consultant Colin Ward is advising operators to insist on putting their vehicles through an ordinary prohibition test rather than the full MoT which costs about £200 a time.

However, the Vehicle Inspectorate denies that its examiners are asking for full MoTs.
