ext time temperatures plunge below freezing watch out for a driver wearing Bermuda shorts and sunglasses in a Hythe Transport wagon — chances are it's Phillip Baker, winner of "The Ultimate Heating Competition" organised by CM and Eberspacher, the cab heater people.
Baker picked up his prize at Truckfest from Dave Lee Travis (right) and Eberspacher boss Russell Brown. The judges' eyes were also caught by some suggestions in the tie-breaker section from other contestants.
When we asked entrants to complete the line "I would like the ultimate heating system because ...'' one driver, who'd better remain anonymous, suggested: "My wife can't afford time off work to keep me warm." Another volunteered: "Being in two sleeping bags is not fun — especially while driving."
But our favourite comes from FB Lycett who reckoned "it's ****ing cold without one, and cheaper than running a 350 Cummins". We'll buy that.
