• East Lancashire Coachbuilders of Blackburn has built its first two bodies on the Dennis Dart chassis using a scaled down version of its single-deck EL 2000.
One of the buses, an 8.5m Dart, has gone into service at Midland Red North's Crewe depot. The 35-seater, which cost £56,000, has been modelled so that its front looks similar to the Leyland Tigers already operated by the company.
MRN will take delivery of a 9.8m East Lancs-bodied Dart in July. Meanwhile ELC is using the 40-seater as a demonstration vehicle.
It hopes to build about 40 Dart-bodied vehicles anually but expects its total vehicle production this year to fall from 50 units to 100.
Old Leyland National integrals are being overhauled by ELC to give them an extra 10year life span at half the price of new single-deckers.
