Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Mercedes-Benz has released details of its revised range of rigids and tractors (CM 14-20 March).

Spearheading the newcomers is the 2435S 6x4 double-drive tractive unit, aimed at on/off road duties or Special Types operation at up to 80 tonnes.

The 2435 has the same basic specification as existing 4x2 and 6x2 derivatives, but gets a longer (3.675m) wheelbase with its two-spring steel bogie. Mercedes estimates a fully fuelled kerb weight of around 8,800kg.

Somewhat lighter is the new 15205, a 24-tonne tractor to take over from the long-serving 1617S. With the smaller LN2 cab, the 1520 is claimed to be almost half a tonne lighter than the 1617, yet boasts 20% more power.

Standard spec includes a seven-speed synchro box with a 4.3:1 rear axle ratio for operation at 24.39 tonnes; with a splitter transmission and a suitable final drive the 1520 can cope with up to 32.5 tonnes.

The multi-wheeler range has been supplemented with the 2422 six-wheeler powered by an uprated version of the Mercedes 0M441 vee-six naturally aspirated engine used in the 2421. Power is up to 167kW (224hp) at 2,100rpm; torque rises by 13% to 844Nm between 1,000rpm and 1,500rpm.

The 2421 remains on sale — the 2422 is only available with an LWB chassis.

Mercedes says there are no plans to replace the 3025 this year — earlier reports had indicated that it would be superseded by the 3029.
